Proverbs 22:6. According to Benson Commentary, “Train up or instruct children, in the way they should go, or according to God’s principles, as soon as they are capable of receiving instruction. Early childhood impressions can greatly impact the course of a child’s life. Thus, when they grow up, they are most likely to stay the course of their foundational beginnings.” Teaching them that Jesus is The Way, prepares them for following God’s plans for their lives.

When we invite Jesus Christ to become the King of our lives, He promises to equip us with everything needed for our journey. As we daily fellowship with Him and meditate on His word, the Holy Spirit will reveal to us the heart of the Father.  The Holy Spirit is our royal advisor and counselor, who leads and guides our steps.

Like a good Father, the Lord trains His children in the way they should go. He draws us close to Himself, so that we do not turn away from the path set before us. He guides us and keeps us on the right track. There are some choices in life that try to derail us and delay our destinies.  Even if we get off track, at times, when we call out to God for wisdom, His gentle hand draws us back on His path.

As royal heirs and children of the King, we are in training for reigning. A young royal learns what it means to be a child of the King, and what they have inherited, such as authority and power. We are on-the-job-training as ambassadors for Christ, to represent the King and His kingdom. How well we represent the king is a result of how well we follow His instructions.

Royal training requires a process of growth, which first begins with complete trust in the Father’s love towards us. When we trust our Father, then we know that His instructions are for our protection, blessing, His purposes, joy, peace, prosperity and wholeness in all areas of our lives.  He does not instruct us to do anything that is contrary to His love for us. He is not our enemy nor does He want to hurt us in any way. He has our very best interest in mind, for kingdom living and for His glory, here on earth.

As  baby Christians, we first drink milk and then, later, when able to digest more, we eat solid food.  “But solid food is for the mature, whose spiritual senses perceive heavenly matters.  And they have been adequately trained by what they’ve experienced to emerge with understanding of the difference between what is truly excellent and what is evil and harmful (Hebrews 5:14 (TPT).” This is referring to spiritual maturity, and with spiritual growth, we are better able to discern right from wrong. Like getting training wheels for your first bike, you learn to pedal, and with repetition of falling down and getting back up, you develop your new skill. Or like when you began school, there were levels of learning. First primary school, then secondary, next high school, then college.

The Lord wants to continually grow us in the the knowledge of Him as it says in Ephesians 1:17,  “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[ of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.”

The Lord trains us in a class of higher learning, which surpasses the natural realm. He teaches us about His kingdom principles and realm. He instructs us in the decisions of life and how to love Him, ourselves and others. As we seek Him in all our ways, we learn that He is our loving Father and that we are His most beloved children.  “For the Lord’s training of your life is the evidence of his faithful love. And when he draws you to himself, it proves you are his delightful child (Hebrews 12:6 (TPT).”

As we trust our loving Father’s instructions, we can have full confidence that our conductor will carry out His plans in our lives. With Him, we will reach our destined destination.

Dedicate your children to God and point them in the way that they should go, and the values they’ve learned from you will be with them for life (Proverbs 22:6 (TPT).

So train your heart to listen when I speak and open your spirit wide to expand your discernment – then pass it on to your sons and daughters (Proverbs 2:2 (TPT).
